In the middle of the first half of the 17th century, Captain Pedro Perea, accompanied by Father José Pascual, chose a site called Tagúrachic for cattle raising, in order to support the maintenance of the missions. The temple was originally established as a Jesuit mission in 1639, first as a visita (subsidiary settlement) of San Felipe and later of Satevó.

By 1648, it was already functioning as a flourishing hacienda, supplying seeds and livestock. That same year, however, the Tarahumara uprisings devastated the site. It was not until 1673 that Fathers Juan Gamboa and Fernando Barrionuevo undertook the task of formally establishing a mission at the site. In 1674, the Jesuits Tomás de Guadalajara and José Tarda continued their efforts, consolidating a new mission district in the area.

In the report by the inspector Ortiz, written in 1678, it was noted that the church had been completely rebuilt and that the mission already had a comfortable temple and a well equipped residence.

In 1677, Father Francisco de Celada joined as reinforcement, being entrusted with the construction of the current temple of San Francisco de Borjawhere it remained until 1707.

In 2004, restoration work began by Misiones Coloniales de Chihuahua, A.C., in collaboration with the three levels of government, the community, and the Catholic Church. The work was completed in 2008.

Recently, the failure of one of the buttresses reconstructed during that stage was reported, leading to the development of a new reinforcement proposal. Additionally, maintenance work has been carried out, which has been undertaken by the municipality and the parish.
