San Miguel Arcángel

San Miguel originated as a private chapel of what was the Hacienda of San Miguel de los Anchondo, of which no other constructed remains exist and historical information is scarce. Although the exact date is unknown, it is known that the temple was built at the end of the 18th century, making it one of the oldest hacienda constructions in the central and northern part of the state.

The earliest recorded owner is Don Aniceto Anchondo, grandson of Don Juan Matías de Anchondo, one of the sixteen who, along with Deza and Ulloa, founded the city of Chihuahua. It is known that the hacienda and the portion of the lands that still survive have always been inherited among family members, so the current owners are descendants of the Anchondo family.

Except for the bell tower located on the facade, the temple retains most of its original components, both structural and ornamental, as well as the cross and the atrial wall, making it an authentic architectural and artistic gem.

In 2008, the community of San Miguel and Mrs. Consuelo Meléndez, from Cd. Chihuahua and a devotee of the temple, approached Misiones Coloniales de Chihuahua A.C. to request the execution of a restoration project for the chapel.

In the second semester of 2008, students from the Instituto Superior de Arquitectura y Diseño developed a project for the temple. During late 2008 and early 2009, meetings and arrangements were held with representatives from the INAH Chihuahua Center, the Anchondo family, the Secretariat of Planning and Evaluation, the Municipal Government of Santa Isabel, the community of San Miguel, Misiones Coloniales de Chihuahua A.C., and Mrs. Consuelo Meléndez, with the aim of establishing agreements for the project review, resource management, and the stages of the construction work.

The work for the first stage began on September 15th 2009, and concluded on September 28th 2010.

A committee of community representatives was formed, led by Don Chele Mariñelarena and Doña Pepa Carrasco as treasurer. José Ramón Montes was the master in charge of the first stage of the work, along with a crew of five community members. Saydé Sortibrán was the restoration specialist responsible for the second stage, together with two community members. All of them learned construction techniques and procedures using traditional materials, passing this knowledge on to other members of the community and raising awareness of the historical value of their heritage as a legacy for future generations. We preserved the testimony of Enrique Jurado, who participated in both stages and is currently responsible for the maintenance of the temple.
