San Juan Bautista is currently located in the former Nombre de Dios neighborhood. It was initially established as a resting point during Juan de Oñate’s 1592 expedition for the discovery of New Mexico. The military officer and poet who documented this journey was Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá in his account known as La historia de la Nueva México (1610). This route was later used by missionaries and merchants during the Viceroyalty period, eventually achieving the status of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, recently recognized as a cultural itinerary and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Franciscan missionaries established a chapel at this site, originally called San Cristóbal, which initially depended on the Mission of Santa Isabel and later on that of San Francisco de Conchos, before eventually becoming a main parish with its own visiting chapels.

The mission was abandoned in the mid-17th century, and it was not until the late 19th century that the old mission was demolished to make way for a new church, the one we know today.

In 2014, Misiones Coloniales de Chihuahua A.C. was contacted by Priest Gabriel Ramírez to collaborate on the restoration of the church. That same year, the restoration project was presented to federal deputies and senators from Chihuahua; the project was promoted by Deputy Rocío Reza, and the funding was allocated at the end of 2014.

The project could not begin until 2016, covering the restoration of the presbytery roof, chapels, and transept, with this phase completed in early 2017. In 2017, funding was secured with the Mayor of Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos, to complete the restoration of the remaining section of the roof (nave). Work began in July 2018 and concluded in August 2018, and the completed project was received by the community, the parish priest, and the mayor in November 2018.

The third phase was managed and carried out in 2019, from March to May; the funding was entirely provided by the municipal government, with the project delivered to the community in September 2019. A fourth phase is planned for 2021.
